Avoid the Black Friday Hangover!

Man holding his head in pain

The holidays can bring out the best in us. Family. Generosity. Joy. Faith. But sometimes we're left paying for it longer than we would like! Here are 10 tricks to avoiding the Black Friday shopping hangover.

  1. Have a Plan: Seriously, it's that simple. Know what you want and where it is.

  2. Make a Budget: Don't just hope that you can afford everything on your wish list; actually know if you are staying in budget or not.

  3. Just Say No: You entered the day with purpose. Don't deviate from that purpose just because something is a "great deal." Those extras can really add up.

  4. Splurge: Wait, what!? I know, it seems counterintuitive, but if going over budget is your thing, set aside a specific amount and give yourself permission to splurge with it.

  5. Set a Time Limit: Decision fatigue is a real thing. The longer you spend out and about, the higher the chances that unplanned items make it into your shopping cart.

  6. Use Cash: Maybe not in great quantities, but bring the amount that you intend to spend. When the cash is gone, your shopping is done.

  7. Take Breaks: Regardless if you're an introvert or extravert. Introverts need a break just because they need it. Extroverts need a break because they are having too much fun which may lead to overspending!

  8. Create Accountability: Share your plan (budget) and have them check the receipts when you get back from shopping. It's effective.

  9. Shop with a Friend: Same as creating accountability, only this time you are bringing accountability with you...as long as they don't encourage impulse buys.

  10. Know Thyself: only you know your strengths and weaknesses. Be honest with yourself and plan accordingly.

Remember, the holidays should be fun! Even the shopping. But don't allow instant gratification to rob you of your financial peace later.
